North Yorkshire Youth Dance Connecting Heritage
Young people can gain insight and understanding of the heritage and history of a place, through exploring it alongside their own artistic interests. The opportunity to really connect through an arts engagement approach can open their eyes, hearts and minds to places, buildings, history and heritage in new and exciting ways.

North Yorkshire Youth Dance with youth dancers aged 13 - 19 years, were inspired by a dance and heritage community engagement project in 2014. The company members worked with a photographer and his young apprentice, a choreographer and dance leader to create some stunning images in the landscapes of North Yorkshire. Sites included an old ruined abbey and a rock field landscape created thousands of years ago by the ice age. The images reinforced their choreography and led to a deeper appreciation for the landscapes and heritage of the area. The dance piece was performed on stage later, and the backdrop of these images was projected on a large screen, which led to a very atmospheric production. The young dancers said they had enjoyed the chance to experience these places of great heritage and beauty and mix this with their live dance work.
